Chapter Fifteen

Dashiel didn’t like having to steal. As much as they justified they were only taking what belonged to their own family, it felt wrong to be sneaking around Zarram Dragonhold like a common thief.

But Dashiel needed the silvernix, and if he asked anybody for it, he’d have to explain what it was for, and it would never have been allowed. Not even by Vance.

He should understand how important this is.

Dashiel had been raised from birth to be a dragonrider. And a dragonrider’s core purpose was to serve Elundrae in the fight against the shadow dragon’s revenants. That was the war they fought.

But what if they could do something to end the war once and for all?

The Zarrams still had a reasonable supply of silvernix, which they used primarily for taming dragons, or the most extreme of illness or injury only. Although even when Vance had his accident, their father erred on the side of frugality, deciding that it was too late to save the leg anyway.

Dashiel thought they should have tried regardless, but that silvernix dose was one more dragon that could be tamed within their collection, to continue growing their wealth.

And now, Dashiel decided that the one dose of silvernix he’d just stolen was what should have been spent on their brother’s leg.

It wouldn’t be missed. Not immediately anyway. At the next accounting day, the loss would be noticed, but Dashiel hoped by then he would be able to show everyone proof that he could retrain an untamed dragon.

Dashiel was sure they just needed to start with a dragon they’d already worked with. One they reared and trained and already had a connection with.

Moving through Zarram Dragonhold, Dashiel often received surprised looks from the staff and workers at the dragonling slinking along at their heels. As far as they all knew, Shiff was tamed now and acting under verbal commands.

But there were often mutterings about how they’d never seen a hatchling take to training so quickly. It normally took months or years to get a tamed dragonling to follow verbal orders.

“That’s Dashiel for you, though. One of the best trainers I’ve seen,” an older feed manager told their assistant as Dashiel strode by.

“I still don’t like how it looks at me,” the assistant whispered back, just loud enough for Dashiel to hear.

One day, Dashiel would be able to reveal to all of them that Shiff was well trained because she was able to think for herself. One day soon.

Shiff was a few months old now and getting big. Her thoughts came through clearer than ever, and there were times she challenged Dashiel’s commands, making them worry they were losing control over her. But even if Shiff didn’t want to follow orders every time, Dashiel could feel they’d developed a bond, a relationship beyond master and servant.

All the other dragonriders invested at the same time as Dashiel trained their dragonlings together. Dashiel had been provided special dispensation to train Shiff alone, being as they lived at the dragonhold that
